This Week in 7/21 Worship

Dear Grace Family,

Many years ago, I bought a little book at a Cokesbury store called, “You Might Be A United Methodist If…” Ironically it was published by Chalice Press which is a Disciples of Christ Publishing House. The book was a United Methodist take on Jeff Foxworthy’s phrase, “You might be a redneck…” Here are some examples:

You might be a United Methodist if…

  • you don’t take a Tums when your heart is strangely warmed
  • you know that a “circuit rider” is not an electrical device
  • you felt the NCAA penalties against SMU football were too harsh
  • half the people in your pew lip-sync the words to the hymns
  • you’ve never heard a sermon on hell and don’t feel you’re missing out

And my favorite “You might be a United Methodist if…”

  • you consider the monthly potluck dinner a sacrament

We don’t have monthly potlucks at Grace, but we have added them back in about five times a year. Our next potluck is this coming Sunday at 11:30 AM in Grace Gathering. If you attend the 11:00 worship, we would love to have you join us as soon as worship is over. The potluck is more than a great opportunity to try many different foods, it is a time of fellowship with your church family. In my mind, the heavenly banquet described in the Bible will look a lot like a United Methodist potluck. If you have the same vision in your head, “you might be a United Methodist!”

See you in worship!

Barry
