This Week in 7/14 Worship
Dear Grace Family,
This week the “Burger Boys” met for the fourth time. If you have not heard of the Burger Boys, it is a group of men who meet the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM to eat burgers and sip beverages. That is the only thing on the agenda. This past Wednesday, 28 men squeezed around three tables. Some showed up as early as 6:00 and most stayed until after 8:30 and we faithfully stuck to our simple agenda.
I have been pondering the appeal of this group. It is made up of men from all ages. The youngest is still in our GUMY youth group and at least one of the attendees is in his nineties. It is made up of people from each of our worship services and some who don’t come to worship at all. Every place we have met has been loud and somewhat chaotic. It is hard to hear everyone at the table and yet the group continues to grow. I have a simple theory for the success, and it is not the quality of the food and drink. We are all longing for a place where we feel accepted as part of the group. When someone comes through the door, we find more room around the table. It doesn’t matter how old you are, your political party, what team you root for or where you worship. On the second Wednesday of each month, you have a place at the table.
What is happening with the Burger Boys can easily be expanded to a vision for the church. My hope is that Grace United Methodist Church is an ever-expanding table. We are a place that is actively inviting others to come and share the good food of the gospel. It may be a little loud and chaotic at times, but if you are hungry to find a place to call home, we have room.
See you in worship!
Barry
