This Sunday in 6/29 Worship

Dear Grace Family,

I am feeling the heat this week. Not because it is hot outside but because of the subject of my sermon this Sunday. We are in a series about types of stories found in our Bible. This week I will attempt to talk about “War Stories.” I find myself holding in tension two things I know are true. The first is that I am uncomfortable with war or violence of any kind. I appreciate our military, and I am more than grateful for every person who has served to keep us safe. At the same time, I wish that I lived in a world where the military was unnecessary because we have learned to live in peace. The second thing I know is true is that the Bible, especially the Old Testament, is full of war stories. Some of the stories even claim God instructs the people to go to war. How do I resolve that tension? The answer may be, “Not very well.”

I know that I am not the only person who has struggled with making sense of the violence in the Bible. I may not have all the answers to share this Sunday, but I invite you to join the conversation with me as we take an honest look at our faith and what the Bible says.

See you in worship!

Barry
