This Sunday in 6/15 Worship

Dear Grace Family,

Today is Friday the 13th, a day that is typically considered unlucky. It got me thinking, why did this day get such a bad reputation. What is the history of Friday the 13th? As you might have guessed, the answer is not clear. One of the first documented references appears in a biography of Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, written in 1969 by Henry Sutherland Edwards. Rossini considered Friday and the number 13 unlucky. Ironically, Rossini died on Friday the 13th.

One of the traditions linked to this date is a connection to the crucifixion of Jesus. Judas, who betrayed Christ, was considered the thirteenth guest at the last supper and Jesus was crucified on a Friday. One more interesting fact; every year has at least one Friday the thirteenth. Some years have as many as three.

None of this has anything to do with worship this coming Sunday at Grace. I believe that any Sunday I get to worship with my church family is my lucky day. There is a 50% chance of rain on Sunday. If it is raining in the morning, our outdoor worship will move inside to Grace Gathering. This week Pastor Changhyun Kim will share his call story at our early worship. At 9:00 we will begin a new sermon series called “Inspired.” For seven weeks we will explore the different types of writings found in our scriptures beginning with “Origin Stories.” Finally at Common Grace, Pastor Mitch will conclude his interview series, “13 to 30” as he talks to Chris Moriera. Chris was born In Kansas City, but his family is from Brazil. He has lived both in the United States and Brazil and has a unique perspective on living his faith in two different cultures.

I love all of our worship options on Sunday mornings at Grace. I feel lucky to be part of such a diverse family of faith.

See you in worship!

Barry
