This Sunday in 3/2 Worship
Dear Grace Family,
I was a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan when I was younger. Not only did I read the comic strip each day in the newspaper, but I would also buy compilation books of the comic. If you don’t know Calvin and Hobbes, Calvin was a young boy with a big imagination. Hobbes was his stuffed tiger who came alive whenever no one besides Calvin was around. The characters are names for John Calvin, the 16th Century protestant reformer and Thomas Hobbes, the 17th Century philosopher.
One of my favorite story lines was about the transmogrifier machine. It was actually a cardboard box with a dial drawn on the outside. When the machine is first introduced in the comic strip, Calvin explains to Hobbes how it works, “You step into the chamber, set the appropriate dials and it turns you into whatever you want to be. The first time Calvin tries the transmogrifier, he turns himself into a tiger, just like Hobbes. Hobbes is not overly impressed.
This Sunday is “Transfiguration Sunday” on the Christian calendar. Every time we tell the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus, I think about Calvin and his transmogrifier machine. Jesus didn’t step into a cardboard box, instead he took two of his disciples to the top of Mount Tabor. On the mountain, they saw something change about Jesus. His face began to glow and his clothes became dazzling white. It must have been amazing to see. However, the biggest change was not what happened to Jesus, but what happened to the disciples. The experience gave them the inspiration and courage to come down from the mountain and walk with Jesus to the cross.
This weekend is our last Sunday before the beginning of Lent. We will hear the story of the Transfiguration in traditional worship as we prepare to walk with Jesus to the cross. The first day of Lent is on Ash Wednesday when we will worship at 6:30 in the Celebration Center. Next Sunday will be the beginning of our Lenton worship series on the Lord’s Prayer. Lent is a powerful season of reflection, renewal and sometime transmogrification as we become the people God created us to be.
See you in worship!
