This Sunday in 3/16 Worship

Dear Grace Family,

When I was in junior high school (that was before we had middle schools), a new Associate Pastor was appointed to the church I attended. His name was William Glaser but we just called him Pastor Will. He was a young pastor so of course they gave him the junior high youth. It was just one of his many responsibilities. I can’t remember many things that he taught us as youth, but I do remember one phrase we used around him, “Where there is a will, there is a way, and since we have a “Will” with us, there must be a way.” We thought we were so clever.

The other thing I remember about Pastor Will is that he taught our confirmation class. He decided that one of the requirements of each confirmand was to participate in a worship service. One day he called and asked if I would read the scripture the following Sunday. I agreed, but then he asked me to come to the church and practice. I was a little insulted. I didn’t need to practice reading. How hard could it be? My parents thought otherwise. I think they wanted to do everything to make sure I would do well in front of the congregation.

I did go to the church and practice, but that is not what I remember most about the experience. On Sunday when I walked up to the lectern, something happened to me. As I stood in front of the congregation to read the passage, I had the strangest sensation that I was exactly where I was supposed to be. Reading scripture and leading worship felt like home. I look back on that experience as a major event in my call to ministry. Through a “Will” I was discovering my own way to live out God’s will for my life.

This Sunday in worship we will continue our series on the Lord’s Prayer by digging into the phrase, “Thy will be done.” I invite you to join us in person or online as we seek God’s will in our lives.

See you in worship!

Barry
