Welcome! It is hard to know what to expect when coming to a new church. The information below is provided to help you prepare for your visit to Grace. If your question is not answered here, please feel free to contact our office at any time.
Choosing a worship service is a lot like choosing the best BBQ in KC – there are a lot of choices and everyone has a favorite. Each of our worship services is a bit different and designed to meet different preferences and needs.
5:30 PM Saturday lasts about an hour and features songs from the hymnal accompanied by piano. Communion is served every week. Dress for this service is casual – most people wear jeans. This service meets in the Celebration Center sanctuary (East Entrance).
8:00 AM Sunday service lasts about 45 minutes and features songs from the hymnal accompanied by piano. Dress is business casual. Although this service meets in Grace Gathering Room (West Entrance) most of the year, during the summer months (typically Memorial Day – Labor Day), we meet outdoors when the weather permits. Bring a lawn chair and worship outside on the property behind the church! Dress is very casual in the summer.
9:15 and 10:45 AM Sunday services last about an hour and are very similar in style – both typically include organ and choral music. The service at 10:45 is a bit more traditional, with pastors wearing robes and sharing more responsive readings during worship. Both services meet in the Celebration Center (East Entrance).
River of Life is our contemporary service, which meets at 10:45 AM in Grace Gathering Room (West Entrance). This family-friendly service has guitars, keyboard, and drums. Communion is offered each week and dress is casual.

Pastor Nanette typically preaches at all services except River of Life at 10:45 AM, which is led by Pastor Tiffany. Learn more about our pastoral staff here.
We believe that Holy Communion is the Lord’s Supper, not ours. United Methodists practice an “open table,” which means anyone who earnestly repents and seeks to live in peace with God and neighbor is welcome to take communion. We do not refuse anyone who desires to receive, regardless of your church membership and whether or not you’ve been baptized. Children may receive Communion at any age – families should decide independently when their child is ready to participate in Holy Communion.
Communion at Grace is received by method of intinction; during this part of worship, rows will be dismissed by the ushers to come forward and receive a small piece of bread, which you’ll then dip in the cup of juice. After you receive Communion, you may return to your seat. If for any reason you choose not to receive Communion, simply remain seated when others go forward and no one will question what you do.
A gluten-free station is available at each service for those with dietary restrictions or allergies.
Sunday Morning Activities for Kids and Youth
There are several options for families who attend with their children or teenagers on Sunday mornings. You may find that one of these options works for you this week and another works better next week. We always welcome you to do what is best for your family.
Our primary Sunday School hour coincides with 9:15 AM worship. During this time, we offer Sunday school classes for all ages – children, youth, and adults. Some families come at 9:15 and each attends their Sunday School class from 9:15-10:15. After Sunday School, they meet up and grab a donut in the lobby before going to church together at 10:45 AM. Other families check their children in to the Sunday School classroom and parents attend 9:15 worship. They then pick their child up after service and head out to enjoy the rest of their day.
Some families choose to bring their children into worship with them. This is true for all worship services. Pastor Nanette is NEVER bothered by children in service and they are always welcome to attend with their parents. Kids Worship Activity bags are located at each door as you enter both sanctuaries. These are filled with activities for kids of all ages and are designed to help kids engage with the message of worship while you enjoy service. Feel free to borrow a bag and return it to the stand when worship is over.
Family Room & Nursery
We offer a Family Room just outside the Celebration Center (right behind the cabinet area where coffee is made) for nursing mothers as well as children who are fussing or just bored by adult church! In this room you will find rocking chairs, a changing table, toddler toys, and a live video feed of the sermon so you can continue to worship while tending to your child’s needs.
Our nursery is operated by paid staff and available at all services. It is open for children two and under at 9:15 AM service – children three and older can attend Sunday School at this time. For all other worship services, nursery is open for newborns – Kindergarteners.
Safety & Security
Safety of our children and youth is highly valued at Grace UMC. That is why families are required to check each child into the nursery or Sunday School each week before dropping off their child. This gives volunteers and paid staff a chance to collect important information such as any allergies or special needs, as well as who is able to pick up the child after worship. There are always at least two adult leaders in each room and each leader, whether paid or volunteer, has been through Safe Gatherings training, which teaches appropriate child/adult boundaries, and has passed a background check.
