These 6th grade mission trips allow us the opportunity to introduce another GUMY mission trip tradition, as well as our favorite F-word: Flexibility. Working with City Union Mission has always been a great experience. We know the work we do is always appreciated because we hear from the staff, clients and residents how grateful they are. However, our work is always subject to change, depending on how the Mission’s needs change from day to day. So we remain flexible at all times.
Our work today was changed on us once we arrived. Rather than unpacking and organizing boxes of donations, a task that would have yielded a measurable accomplishment that we could be proud of, we were redirected to a dining hall and asked to deep clean plastic tables and chairs. This is the kind of tedious work that can be hard for volunteers to get excited over. Your students didn’t flinch at the request, but instead work hard enough that we ended up having to ask for and complete additional work tasks, and still ended the day early. Our flexibility paid off, and resulted in a trip to Andy’s for frozen custard and lingering.
We had a particularly interesting discussion tonight. We talked about what Love in Action looks like in its various forms. We discussed how even seemingly insignificant tasks can be extremely beneficial to our host, and how some of those tasks allows us to treat others with dignity and respect, something that may not be common in their lives
One of our questions asked students if they have someone in their life who they can go to with questions about their faith, someone who would listen without judgement and answer honestly. One student announced that she would like to ask her questions to Pastor Nanette, then she produced a long list of questions that she has created just since we arrived yesterday. It didn’t take long before we texted Pastor Nanette to see of she had some time to answer some questions, and sure enough, we spent 20 minutes on a speakerphone having discussion with our Senior Pastor. It was a very unique experience, one of my most memorable in the last 10 years!
We are looking forward to another great day of work tomorrow, and having some fun before heading home and showing off our newfound table washing skills! Be sure and ask us to demonstrate!
