Grace UMC Olathe

Grace is a vital and vibrant large congregation growing in faith and discipleship, and serving in mission and ministry with our community and world. Our 160+ years of commitment to the Olathe community gives us both a love of worship traditions and a passion for new, innovative ways of thinking about faith.

Loving God, living like Jesus, and serving the world

Grace UMC is a three-location congregation: our main worship building at Ridgeview, our missions center at Center of Grace, and a new extension campus, Common Grace, in Southwest Johnson County.

Grace will continue to be grace. That means nothing will change in our welcome of all people in all the different ways we are created and made by a loving and generous and merciful God. We do not believe God made some people less-than-worthy because of who they are and who they love.

WE. ARE. GRACE.

Grace United Methodist Church

This was one year ago, but I can honestly remember it like happened yesterday.
The day was crazy hot, even for summer in Kansas. I woke up after a long, restless night, with my heart racing and feet ready to move. It felt like we had talked for hours and hours about every detail: the bulletins, the order of worship, the announcements, the branding, the welcome, the chairs, the music. For the brief sermon I was going to share, I’d written, wadded up, rewritten, rewadded up, and repeated more times than I care to admit. There were refreshments lined up from Park Street Pastry, volunteer name tags, children’s activities, and a palpable anticipation.

It was the first preview service for Common Grace.

All of the volunteers gathered, and we talked through logistics and plans and ideas and hopes and shared a prayer. Then I disappeared to the back room so if I threw up no one would know. I never throw up, but that night I almost did.

Sometime right before we were supposed to start, someone came and told me that they were putting more chairs out. I asked why. They said there were people. Like, more people than we’d put chairs out for.

I was honestly a little bit surprised.

I shouldn’t have been surprised; when the Church gets excited about something, we ought not be surprised what God will do with and through us. But when I walked into the room I choked on my water. There were a lot of you in the room, and more people walking in and more people standing in the hall. You were happy, excited, and proud to be a part of the moment. I was proud to have so many wonderful people be a part of the moment.

And then I almost started crying during the opening announcements. And, like two more times during the service. I don’t think most people knew. But Pastor Nanette knew; she gave me a reassuring thumbs up. And my wife knew.

So many of you all were there day one. You were there when months and months of prayers and visioning and grinding through questions and confusion and standstill and uncertainty culminated into a moment. A moment of praise, promise, and possibility.

And that’s the foundation that we’re building on. Praise. Promise. Possibility. Living into an evolving vision and relying on an unchanging love. Turning a moment – a beautiful, God-filled moment – into a life-giving, transformational movement. Making grace common.

So thank you. Thank you for being a people who say yes to God’s vision. Thank you for being a community who uses your prayers, experience, gifts, and witness to sustain a movement. Thank you for helping me understand what God is calling us to, and for trusting me to lead this wonderful adventure. I’m so grateful for all that we’ve seen, heard, felt, and learned in the last year, and I simply cannot wait to see what the next year looks like as we continue to grow into the community God has envisioned.

-pastor kyle“Behold, I am doing a new thing. Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” We dreamed. God dreamed bigger. Common Grace Church, you are already loved and blessed beyond measure by an amazing Savior.
