Today started with an early breakfast, then worship here at our host church. We may have doubled their average attendance size! They were very friendly and gracious, making sure we felt welcome and were comfortable with our lodging arrangements. We offered our appreciation to the whole church when several students got up and led everyone in a couple of contemporary worship songs. After service, we took the opportunity to visit with many of the congregants and share a little about ourselves with one another. God is good, all the time!
Our first worksite is another church, which is also where we will eat our evening meals each day. We got to work alongside a group from Crooksville, Ohio. Most of our work was done outside, or in the cramped space of a large storage trailer sorting through various items recovered after the flood. We also spent some time canvassing the neighborhood with invitations to a community picnic we will be hosting later in the week.
We are blessed by a group local women who have volunteered to cook for our two combined groups, and have started the week of eating very well. Our night concluded with student led worship, two students who delivered individual devotions, discussion and debrief of the day and late night snacks.
Tomorrow promises to be full of hard work, lots of sun and great memories. We look forward to a couple specific locations, knowing the residents are eager to share their stories of the flood with us. The little we have learned so far is nearly impossible to imagine, and we are already struck by the joy and friendliness everyone has shown us in the midst of their long and difficult recovery. All the time, God is good!
