Each year as families prepare for the start of school in August, the Center of Grace makes available special funds to help low-income families buy new shoes for their children. Even inexpensive tennis shoes can cost families upwards of $50, and as children grow and wear down old shoes every year, this expense can be difficult to manage for struggling parents. Monica Gutierrez, Office Administrator at Center of Grace, shared with us this story about a family for whom the Children’s Shoe Fund truly made a difference this year:
“This year, we helped a lady named Tara* with shoe vouchers for her children. Shortly after she received her vouchers, she found out that another lady from her church, Irene* didn’t have any money to buy shoes for her children and they were sad since they couldn’t afford any new shoes for school. Tara called the Salvation Army this morning asking to get a referral letter. She gave Irene a ride to the Salvation Army, then brought her with us to get the voucher for shoes. When Irene saw the amount of the voucher, she started to cry. She shared that this morning when she left the house, her oldest child asked if she could stop at the store and buy glue to use it on his old tennis shoes. She also shared that her daughter didn’t have shoes other than flip flops. She was amazed how good God was and kept crying and saying what a blessing she had received with the shoe vouchers.”
We are so thankful to be able to use this opportunity to share God’s love with our community and to meet very real needs of local families, and we are thankful for your support in this mission!
